Wellington on course for Royal Ascot following pleasing workout

Hong Kong sprinter Wellington came through his final workout before heading to Royal Ascot in fine style on Tuesday.

Trained by Richard Gibson, Wellington is hoping to become the first winner based in Hong Kong since Little Bridge won the King’s Stand in 2012.

Wellington has won four Group Ones but has been beaten on all four starts in 2023 by current Hong Kong sprinting sensation Lucky Sweynesse.

Alexis Badel partnered Wellington in his work but no express buttons were pressed ahead of his run in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes on Saturday week.

“There’s no greater judge than Alexis to base his (Wellington’s) form and condition on and we’re really satisfied with the trial,” said Gibson.

“It’s hot and we’ve got to travel in a few days. He did everything perfectly today. He’s on the plane on Saturday and we’re looking forward to it. It was a good boost to see him work so well this morning.”
