Trainer Marcus Tregoning has high hopes for Mohaather in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood

Trainer Marcus Tregoning says Mohaather is ‘on fire’ ahead of his run in the Group One Qatar Sussex Stakes.

Frustration had peppered the career of the four-year-old owned by Sheik Hamdan Al Maktoum but victory on Wednesday afternoon would be the biggest in the career of Tregoning since Sir Percy won the 2006 Derby.

Mohaather won the Greenham Stakes last spring but was denied a run in the 2,000 Guineas when a stress fracture was detected in his off foreleg.

He then endured a luckless run on his comeback in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot in June when running up a series of blind alleys before finishing seventh to Circus Maximus.

But Mohaather showed his capability when streaking to a three-and-a-half- length win from San Donato, a rival on Wednesday, in Ascot’s Group Two Summer Mile.

Tregoning said: ‘The Queen Anne was obviously a disaster but you can’t dwell on it. I’d have been disappointed if Mohaather hadn’t won the Summer Mile. He was on fire and still is.

‘I try not to get too attached to the horses because they come and go but this one is special. Mohaather is the best we have had for several years.’

Opposition again includes Circus Maximus, last year’s runner-up, unbeaten Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Siskin and runner-up Vatican City, plus English 2,000 Guineas winner Kameko.

So important is Siskin to trainer Ger Lyons and jockey Colin Keane that they will have to self-isolate for 14 days when returning to Ireland, a move which could cost Keane the Irish championship.

Possibly prompted by the success of Mohaather, there has been a fresh injection of Hamdan-owned talent into the Tregoning stable, which includes yesterday’s winner Alkumait.
