- Couple, celebrant, guests scrambled over fence between races
- Quickly had a ceremony to pronounce them husband wife
- One of the guests reportedly got into trouble for bringing a beer
Social media has had a field day after viral vision emerged of a couple getting married at Doomben Racecourse in Brisbane last weekend.
Doomben has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1933. Originally developed as a replacement for the nearby Albion Park Racecourse, Doomben quickly gained prominence as a premier horse racing venue in Queensland.
And it holds a special place in the hearts of one couple, who decided to chuck a sneaky wedding in between races beside the track on Saturday.
The touching scenes were captured by TikTok account MadMonday, an organisation that helps book trips away for sporting teams when their seasons end.
‘This will do me,’ the caption read.
There were hundreds of online comments about the unusual nuptials at Doomben Racecourse
According to MadMonday, the couple, celebrant and guests all scrambled onto the grass beside the track in between races five and six.
However, one guest was quickly picked up by security for trying to sneak his drink over the fence.
It was a moment so beautiful and yet so uniquely Queensland.
‘Planning your wedding at the track on a race day, what a lad,’ one viewer posted.
‘I mean I love races but could this possibly be taking that a bit far,’ another shocked punter posted.
‘Gotta love Brisbane,’ said another, tongue firmly in cheek.
In a shade of irony, the race before the ceremony was called the Weddings At Tattersall’s Club Qtis Jewel Prelude Plate.
Guests wore their Saturday racing finest and created their own aisle for the blushing bride to walk down
The day was the first Tattersall’s Racing Club meet for the year at the iconic Queensland track.
The bizarre wedding also provided some rare joy for punters on the day in Queensland, as Doomben turned in a graveyard for favourites leaving racing fans tearing up their tickets – and tearing out their hair.
Several races saw 15-1 and 20-1 longshots salute until the final race when the unfancied Sea Raider got up at the staggering odds of 142 with some bookies.
‘Saturday slaughter right there at Doomben,’ one luckless punter posted.
‘Still cannot believe what we saw at Doomben today,’ added another.
