Databank – Your guide to the afternoon’s action
JOCKEY TO FOLLOW
Three winners in the last fortnight on the All Weather should put a spring in the step of CLIFFORD LEE and he kicks off the first day of the Turf Flat season with a clutch of handy mounts — MARSHMAN (Doncaster, 3.00), LIBERTY LANE (Doncaster, 3.35) and ANCIENT MYTH (Doncaster, 4.10).
TRAINER TO FOLLOW
OLLY MURPHY is on a hot trot with eight winners from his last 21 runners. He has big chances to keep that run going with PICKANUMBER (Bangor, 1.30) and WHAT A JOHNNY (Bangor, 2.00) plus GUNSIGHT RIDGE (Newbury, 2.40).
BIG DAY FOR…
Harry Davies, runner-up to 2022 champion apprentice jockey Benoit De La Sayette, has been forging links after moving back to Newmarket late last year and gets a big chance in the Lincoln on last year’s second AWAAL (Doncaster, 3.35) for Ed and Simon Crisford plus his soft-ground loving stablemate KNIGHT (Doncaster, 1.20) in the Doncaster Mile.
WATCH OUT FOR…
HARPER’S FERRY (Doncaster, 4.10). Beaten in the final stride on his Newmarket debut in October when losing by a nose. Faces a rival who cost £1.6million in King’s Reign but his three relatives to have raced have all won and he is the only runner in this race to hold a Derby entry.
HORSES FOR COURSES
BARADAR (Doncaster, 3.00) puts his best foot forward at the South Yorkshire track, no matter the distance. In four starts he has wins at 6f and 7f plus a third in last season’s Lincoln Handicap and the 2020 Group One Futurity Trophy over 1m.
TRAINER TARGET
Roger Varian has won the William Hill Doncaster Mile three times in the last 10 years. He runs CHARYN (Doncaster, 1.20) this time.
PERFECT PARTNERS
Kieran Shoemark has ridden seven winners from 32 rides for Amy Murphy to show a £1 level stake profit of £27.25. He rides the trainer’s MAMALOUKA (Wolverhampton, 5.45).
BEST RACE FOR FAVOURITES
Five favourites have won the 1.20 and 4.10 at Doncaster and the 1.40 at Newbury in the last 10 years.
TOP PRIZEMONEY EARNERS
BANGOR: 1.30 WEST TO THE BRIDGE – £102,730.
DONCASTER: 1.20 CHARYN – £345,798.
NEWBURY: 5.00 CROSSPARK – £201,514.
ROBIN GOODFELLOW – Best Bets
By Steve Ryder
ASTRAL BEAU (NB) bids to repeat her success of last year in the opening Mile Stakes (1.20) at Doncaster as the Flat season begins on Saturday.
She has form figures of 1113 on ground softer or worse and won this listed contest by four lengths last season on heavy going.
Her only defeat on this ground was when third in a Group Two and she won this on her reappearance last term — as she bids to do again.
Later on the card in the prestigious Lincoln Handicap (3.35), LIBERTY LANE (NAP) should be another horse who will relish testing conditions at the track.
Gelded over the winter, the four-year-old is unbeaten on his two starts on soft ground including when winning a course-and-distance handicap last season off a mark of 97.
His below-par effort at Newmarket on good to firm going can be excused and he should run well from a favourable high draw.
THE WIZARD OF ODDS
By Chris Baker
2.10 NEWBURY
The step up in distance to 2m3f should suit the Dan Skelton-trained KARTOON AND CO who has finished off his last two races strongly after becoming a little outpaced. 9-4
3.00 DONCASTER
MARSHMAN won a Group Three race in France on his first race of last season and was only beaten by five lengths in the Group One King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. 3-1
3.35 DONCASTER
THE GATEKEEPER (nap) ran well on this card last year and ended the season with a win in the Balmoral Handicap on Champions Day. Ground conditions will be in his favour. 10-1
