POGO (NAP) won this race by a nose in 2022 before securing a Group Two at Newmarket later that season — both over his preferred distance of seven furlongs. The eight-year-old looked a big danger to Charyn at Sandown in the Group Two bet365 Mile before weakening into fourth late on over a mile on his first race of this season and then finished a neck second over this course and distance last time in the Spring Trophy.
The reopposing Witch Hunter was two and a half lengths behind him in third, yet that rival is shorter in the market for this race. This drying ground will suit and he has just 2lb to find with Witch Hunter on ratings.
In the opener on the card, the listed Achilles Stakes (1.50), LIVE IN THE DREAM (NB) is dropped in class and should justify favouritism. Last year’s Nunthorpe Stakes winner has run with credit on both of his starts at Haydock, finishing third in the Temple Stakes last season and second in the same race this year on his reappearance, when beaten half a length on unfavoured soft ground.
His best form in recent seasons has been on fast ground, so he should relish this speed test under regular rider Sean Kirrane before heading to the Coral Charge at Sandown next month.
Later at Catterick, Starshine Legend (5.40) looks to hold strong claims on his handicap debut in first-time cheekpieces upped in trip to 1m4f, while Langholm (6.10) can go one better than his most recent two starts at the venue.
