Databank – Your guide to the afternoon’s action

JOCKEY TO FOLLOW

BRIAN HUGHES often makes hay at a support meeting while the focus is on the main event and that can happen again. He heads to Newcastle where his rides include ONE MORE STROKE (Newcastle, 1.30), CHOOSETHENEWS (2.05) and BENEFICIALLY YOURS (2.40).

TRAINER TO FOLLOW

MARK WALFORD could also have a profitable afternoon at Newcastle where he saddles PERCULATOR (12.55), CHOOSETHENEWS (2.05), CALL ME JACK (3.25) and POETRIA (4.30).

BIG DAY FOR…

Twenty-two-year-old Caoilin Quinn, who has only had 62 career winners. He has his first Grand National ride on Welsh National winner NASSALAM (Aintree, 4.00) and also partners BOTOX HAS (Aintree, 3.05) in the Liverpool Hurdle.

WATCH OUT FOR…

CALDWELL POTTER (Aintree, 1.55).

Makes her debut for the Paul Nicholls stable having cost £630,000 after winning a Grade One for Gordon Elliott to foster a big reputation.

HORSES FOR COURSES

KINONDO KWETU (Aintree, 2.30) just missed out on a place in the Grand National line-up but now takes his chance on the course’s conventional steeplechase track over which his record is two wins and a third from three runs.

TRAINER TARGET

DAN SKELTON has won the William Hill Handicap Hurdle twice in four years. He is represented by WEST BALBOA, GWENNIE MAY BOY and SEEFIN (Aintree, 1.20).

PERFECT PARTNERS

AIDAN KEELEY has ridden eight winners from 26 rides for James Owen to show a £1 level stake profit of £14.85. He rides the trainer’s TENYATTA (Wolverhampton, 5.10).

BEST RACE FOR FAVOURITES

Six favourites have won the 1.55 at Aintree in the last 10 years.

TOP PRIZEMONEY EARNERS

Aintree: 4.00 ROI MAGE £848,632

Chelmsford: 11.30 DOCUMENTING £190,189

Yarmouth: 5.30 STONE CIRCLE £215,809

MAHLER MISSION has finished second on both of his two starts this season over inadequate trips and will have been trained to peak for this race following a 133-day break.

An unlucky faller at the Cheltenham Festival last season when the most likely winner of the National Hunt Chase, he can provide trainer John McConnell with a winner of the race at the first time of asking.

The Willie Mullins pair of I AM MAXIMUS and MEETINGOFTHEWATERS could prove the biggest dangers, with PANDA BOY another each-way alternative at a bigger price.

THE WIZARD OF ODDS

NOBLE YEATS relishes the unique test posed by the Grand National, having won the race in 2022 and finishing fourth last year.

He showed his class again when beating Paisley Park in the Grade Two Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham in January — one of three prep runs over the smaller obstacles.

Title-chasing jockey Harry Cobden has been booked to ride and the pair can defy top weight.

I AM MAXIMUS, winner of the Irish equivalent last season, COKO BEACH, second over these fences in the Becher Chase, and MINELLA INDO should all run well.
