One of horse racing’s biggest event, the 2024 Cheltenham festival gets underway this week with plenty of money on offer.

The festival will begin on Tuesday, March 12 and will come to a close on Friday, March 15 when the penultimate race of the week is held.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the biggest race of the week which holds one of the biggest prize pots in the sport.

Due to it’s prestige, the Gold Cup has been known to sky rocket winning jockeys and trainers careers if they manage to cross the finish line first.

It doesn’t just raise your status as a jockey or a trainer however, if you manage to clutch first place owners and jockeys also walk a way with a significant increase in the weight of their wallets.

Des Champs owner, Mrs Audrey Turley revealed they pocketed a whopping £351,688 for bagging the top prize.

Gold Cup 2024: Prize Money

The 2024 Gold Cup will have a jaw dropping prize pot of £625,000 ($800,000).  However this is to be split between the top five finishers.

The winner will take home around £351,688. This was revealed last year by Galopin Des Champ’s owner, Mrs Audrey Turley last year.  

Second place will pocket £132,500, third will walk away with £66,312, fourth place gets £33,125 and fifth comes away with £16,625.

The significance of the prize money makes the Gold Cup the most lucrative jump race in the UK and Ireland putting aside the Grand National.

How much money does the winning jockey of the Gold Cup earn? 

Owners and trainers walk away with the majority of the prize money, however jockeys do earn a small amount for the tremendous rides they give their horses in the race.

The winning Jockey usually takes home between eight and nine percent of the prize money. Meaning the winning jockey of the Gold Cup will walk away with around £50,000.

Jockeys who manage to place also take home a small amount of the prize money but it is usually only around three to four percent of the total amount.

2024 Gold Cup: What you need to know

The 2024 Gold Cup will feature 16 horses who will all compete for the £625,000 winners prize. 

The prestigious race will be held on the final day of Cheltenham, which is Friday, March 15 this year.

The race is due to get underway at 3:30pm UK time and will be broadcast live on ITV1 and ITV X in the UK.
