Good Magic’s Mage Gives Castellano First Derby

With GI Curlin Florida Derby winner Forte (Violence) a late defection from the GI Kentucky Derby, the horse who finished second by a length to him last out, MAGE (c, 3, Good Magic–Puca, by Big Brown), rallied past leader Two Phil’s (Hard Spun) to prevail by a length in the 149th GI Kentucky Derby. Angel of Empire (Classic Empire) was third. The winning time was 2:01.57. The winner paid $32.42. The victory was a long overdue one for Hall of Fame rider Javier Castellano, and was also the first Derby victory for fellow Venezuelan Gustavo Delgado.
