Seven Barrows trainer Nicky Henderson has been left ‘traumatised’ after his star horse Constitution Hill was rushed to hospital with suspected colic.

Colic can be a terminal condition for horses, and fears were raised when ‘significant mucus’ was found in Constitution Hill’s airwaves.

Blood tests then revealed the horse was not well enough to run, and was forced to miss the Cheltenham festival

His condition left the Seven Barrows camp stunned, but despite fears the horse may never race again, a traumatised Henderson released a statement on Sunday morning where he declared he hope to have his star performer home soon.

Henderson said; ‘We have had a few traumatic days with poor Constitution Hill as he had to go to the veterinary hospital on Wednesday night in order to monitor suspected colic and I am pleased to sat that they have managed to avoid surgery so far and this morning he is being reintroduced to a normal diet.

‘If this goes well he could come home in the next day or so.

‘We are not completely out of the woods but very hopeful that he will soon be back which will be an enormous relief.

‘This will obviously interfere with our plan to get to Punchestown which is very sad but the only important thing at the moment is to get him safely home.’

The Champion Hurdle monster had been as short as 1-4 to retain his crown, and was seen as many as one of the banker’s of the festival.

However, the unbeaten seven-year-old was pulled following shocking racecourse gallop at Kempton, which could have been down to the horse’s poor health.

If the horse recovers in time, he may race at either Aintree’s Grand National Festival in two weeks.

Or possibly at Punchestown’s Festival at the end of April, where he’d face his great hurdle rival State Man.
