A female jockey is in a critical condition after an incident at Gatton, Queensland on Thursday afternoon.

The day’s remaining races were called off after Emily Pomfrett was airlifted to hospital following a serious incident on track.

According to The Courier Mail, Pomfrett’s horse, Wanta Willow, flipped on top of her prior to the running of race face.

Glen Prentice, boss of Queensland Jockeys Association, confirmed Pomfrett had been flown to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in nearby Brisbane

‘The ambulance sedated her at the track before airlifting to PA Hospital with suspected sternum, lung and brain injuries, but too early to tell any more,’ he said.

‘She was unconscious for a lengthy period and will be assessed on the flight and once at the PA.

‘Her partner and father are en route to PA.’

Pomfrett is a young mother and only made her race riding debut last year.

She delivers acupuncture to horses as her day job.

A spokesperson for the hospital confirmed that Pomfrett was in a critical but stable condition in their intensive care unit.
