Chelsey Reynolds, the South Australian jockey who was airlifted to hospital following a serious accident, has been placed in an induced coma.

Racing SA provided an update on the health of the 28-year-old apprentice’s condition after she suffered a fall while training on the Fleurieu Peninsula this week.

‘Chelsey Reynolds remains in an induced coma in the Flinders Medical Centre where she is receiving treatment following yesterday’s trackwork incident at Finniss,’ the statement said.

‘Our thoughts are with everyone close to Chelsey during this concerning time. Racing SA is providing support to the family and our wider riding group, particularly members of our apprentice academy where Chesley is much loved.

‘Chelsey’s family have asked us to thank everyone for the messages of love and support they have received. They have also requested privacy at this time.’

The racing organisation said it would provide further updates ‘when possible’.

The statement added that the horse involved had been cleared of any injury.

An up-and-coming talent, Reynolds won best first year apprentice at Racing SA’s Apprentice Awards last week.

She is attached to the stable of Wayne Francis and Glen Kent, and rode a winner from her first ride at Balaklava in July last year. In total, she has seven career wins from 52 rides.

Reynolds said in an interview with Racing SA last year: ‘I’ve had my little first pony since I was eight and then did normal trail riding and stuff, and then my other job closed down and that’s when I found Finniss to fill in the spot but I wasn’t meant to stay there.

‘And Glen found out I could ride and it escalated from there

‘I’ve always been good with animals I think, horses and any others I feel like I always get a good feel for them.’
