Epsom racegoers fume at price of a pint on Derby Day as punters call it ‘daylight robbery’

  • The Epsom Derby took place on Saturday with thousands of punters attending
  • They were left shocked by the price of a pint at the iconic event

Racegoers have been left outraged at the price of a pint at Epsom as tens of thousands flocked to the famous course for Derby Day.

Saturday’s Derby was won by favourite City of Troy, with trainer Aidan O’Brien claiming his 10th win in the race to extend his own record.

But punters were not only focused on the racing, with the price for a drink causing a stir as customers had to fork out almost £8 for a pint.

One fan outlined the issue on X, posting: ‘£7.95 for a pint of Madri at Epsom.

‘Daylight robbery and not even a Guinness tent with music.

‘Cheltenham really is the best.’

March’s Cheltenham Festival attracted thousands of fans across the four days, with an astonishing £6m being spent on Guinness.

Racegoers dressed up for the event that fell just before St Patrick’s Day, but they were also stung by the pricing of alcohol.

A pint of Guinness set back customers £7.50 – only slightly cheaper than the going rate at Epsom – a fact that was not lost on bookies Paddy Power.

In a jibe at the ridiculousness of the pricing, the Irish bookmaker opened a bar – imaginatively titled ‘Paddy’s Bar’ – and gave out a free pint for each customer to greet racegoers at Cheltenham ahead of day one.

Spokesman Paddy Power said: ‘We’re all about making great memories at the Cheltenham Festival, but we all know the English can’t pour a Guinness for love nor money.

‘So what better way to start the week than a proper pint of the black stuff for free, before enjoying the brilliant racing? That’s why we offered punters the chance to start their week £7.50 up!’

Punters also lashed out at booze prices at April’s Grand National, with over 150,000 fans in attendance at Aintree.

Guinness went up from £6.50 in 2023 to £7, while a bottle of champagne was priced at £85 compared to £78 the previous year.
