It was as tactical as it can be at Chester, but the colt and jockey with the right credentials for that eventuality duly came to the fore as San Antonio (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire})–Rain Goddess {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) was steered to success by Ryan Moore in Thursday’s Listed Boodles Dee S. Now just one off the record of 11 renewals set in this Derby prep by Barry Hills, Aidan O’Brien delivered yet another Epsom pretender at the celebrated May Festival as the homebred son of the G3 Snow Fairy S. winner and G1 Irish Oaks and G1 Pretty Polly S. runner-up proved the most straightforward and resolute of the remaining sextet in this 10-furlong contest.
Ridden forward from the break as the well-supported 11-10 favourite Alder (Ire) (Australia {GB}) missed it and ended up over-racing along with Local Dynasty (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), the 16-5 shot was quickly in his comfort zone in a close-up second guided by another free runner in Stormbuster (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Enjoying the rail trip with the market-leaders stacked up in behind, the bay who sports the Tabor colours was committed three out and there to be shot at as Alder swung wide. At the line, that Donnacha O’Brien trainee could get no closer than 1 3/4 lengths to San Antonio with Godolphin’s TDN Rising Star Local Dynasty 2 1/4 lengths further behind in third.
