Constitution’s Webslinger Upsets American Turf

Saturday’s GII American Turf S. looked like a wide-open affair, and in the end it produced a longshot winner, as 22-1 WEBSLINGER (g, 3, Constitution–Arana, by Hard Spun) covered all the ground from midpack but still kicked on resolutely to defeat Far Bridge (English Channel) by a neck in 1:41.54. Major Dude (Bolt d’Oro) was third. Just a $50,000 OBS June pick-up, the winner broke his maiden in the lucrative Nownownow S. last September at Monmouth but was 11th in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. He resurfaced a winner at Gulfstream Feb. 11, was second in that venue’s Colonel Liam S. Mar. 4 and most recently third in the GIII Transylvania S. Apr. 7. Sales history: $45,000 RNA ylg ’21 KEESEP; $25,000 ylg ’21 FTKOCT; $45,000 RNA 2yo ’22 OBSAPR; $50,000 2yo ’22 OBSJUN.
