Newmarket trainer Charlie Fellowes landed his second race of the meeting with William Buick-ridden Chiefofchiefs in the Silver Wokingham Handicap and the branded his win ‘the worst training performance you will see all week’.

The 20-1 shot’s length-and-a-quarter victory from Burmese Waltz came in the 27th race of his career and on the seven-year-old’s first start at six furlongs. He has raced five times at a mile and a quarter.

Fellowes said: ‘I am absolutely furious with myself. That is the worst training performance you will see all week.

‘It has taken me until he is seven to get his trip right and I have called this horse every name under the sun, thinking he was a monkey and not putting it all in. 

‘Actually, it has all been my fault but all’s well that ends well.’

Fellowes won Thursday’s Sandringham Stakes with Hayley Turner-ridden Onassis. Having provided Turner with Thanks Be, the 2019 winner of that race, Fellowes now has three Royal Ascot winners since moving into the stable formerly occupied by Derby winning trainer Luca Cumani.

Fellowes added: ‘Royal Ascot has always been the pinnacle for me and when I set up training a winner at the meeting was always the dream.’
