Charlie Appleby-trained Arabian Crown goes on trial for the Betfred Derby in the bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown on Friday.

William Buick’s mount won three of his four races last season including a maiden at Sandown before romping to a five and a half length win in the Zetland Stakes at Newmarket.

Along with Ancient Wisdom, winner of the Futurity Stakes at Doncaster in October, Arabian Crown was among of a clutch of two-year-olds offering future hope for Appleby after an underwhelming 2023 season.

The trainer said: ‘Arabian Crown has track experience at Sandown, which is always handy, and we were pleased with his recent racecourse gallop at Newmarket. We will hopefully be a lot wiser afterwards as to whether he’s a Derby horse or not.’

Appleby’s Godolphin employers have paid £12,000 to add last week’s impressive Newbury winner Hidden Law to the entries for the Derby run at Epsom on June 1.
