Charlie Appleby eyes Epsom Derby tilt for Hidden Law if the well-bred son of Dubawi can take a step up in class in the Chester Vase

  • Trainer Charlie Appleby won the Derby with Masar (2018) and Adayar (2021)
  • This year he has the ante-post favourites Arabian Crown and Ancient Wisdom

Charlie Appleby will look to strengthen his grip on the Epsom Derby when he steps Hidden Law up in class in Wednesday’s Boodles Chester Vase.

Fresh from winning the 2,000 Guineas last Saturday with Notable Speech, Godolphin trainer Appleby hopes Hidden Law will be able to justify his place in the reckoning for Epsom on June 1.

Appleby won the Derby with Masar (2018) and Adayar (2021) and this year has the ante-post favourites Arabian Crown and Ancient Wisdom. They head the 41 entries remaining in the race after Wednesday’s latest forfeit stage.

Hidden Law could easily join them if he performs well in a race that, most famously, was won by Shergar in 1981. Appleby said: ‘We were delighted with him at Newbury, on his last run, when he showed a big improvement from his first start.

‘We know this is a fair step up in class, but he looked to run to a decent level when winning his maiden. This will hopefully give us a clearer picture.’
