Charles Byrnes Fined 6k For Ellaat Debacle

Following the fourth-place finish of favoured Ellaat (GB) (Heeraat {Ire}) in the Racing Again May 23rd H. at Gowran Park on Wednesday (video), trainer Charles Byrnes was fined €6,000 for breaching Rule 212A.(i), by the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) stewards on Wednesday evening.

The jockey, Gearoid Brouder, was suspended 21 days and ordered to forfeit his riding fee, as he was also found in breach of that rule. Rule 212 A.(i) is defined as “the running and/or riding of a horse in a race, who deliberately or recklessly causes or permitted a horse to run other than on its merits.”

Brouder stated that his instructions for the race were to get his mount to relax, as it had made a noise previously, and do his best from there. In the race, Ellaat reportedly made a noise when racing, hung right in the home straight, and took some time to pull up after the finishing post while being given a quiet ride.

Ellaat, owned by Cathal Byrnes, was banned from competition for 90 days in accordance with the provisions of Rule 212C.(d). In addition, the betting pattern of Ellaat was referred to a senior racing official for further investigation. The stewards at Gowran noted that Ellaat was observed by an IHRB Veterinary Officer to be coughing after the race but was otherwise normal and “not inconvenienced in any way at the time.”
