The only runner in the GI Arkansas Derby field with a win at nine furlongs, Angel of Empire (c, 3, Classic Empire–Armony’s Angel, by To Honor and Serve) parlayed his win in the Feb. 18 GII Risen Star S. to victory in Hot Springs. The 9-2 pick, who raced midpack as Two Eagles River (Cloud Computing) led the field through :23.27 and :47.26 fractions, ranged up and burst clear to win in hand and by daylight. King Russell (Creative Cause) was second, while Reincarnate (Good Magic) finished third. It was trainer Brad Cox’s second consecutive win in the Arkansas Derby, as he also took last year’s edition with Cyberknife (Gun Runner).
