Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy is ready to go big at the Kentucky Derby – with his betting plans leaving Alex Cooper in shock.

Portnoy, who sold his Barstool media company for around $500million in February of last year before buying it back for $1, headed to Churchill Downs with ‘Call Me Daddy’ podcast host Cooper for Friday’s set of races on Derby Week.

Before the day began, Cooper could be seen grilling Portnoy about the amount he planned to wager throughout the day in a video shared by Barstool on social media.

In the video, the influencer first picks up a briefcase belonging to Portnoy and points out how heavy it is, with the latter claiming it contains sunglasses and ‘gambling’ funds.

After being told to bet $10,000 on a horse taking part in Saturday’s Derby, Cooper then asks Portnoy how much he plans on wagering on Friday’s races.

‘Hundreds of thousands,’ the Barstool chief responds to leave her in disbelief. ‘Yeah, a lot of money.’

Cooper then says: ‘I love how you’re like, it’s just money… who cares?’

‘Well it’s like, this is my entertainment,’ Portnoy replied. ‘People do other things and we gamble, so we come in and gamble.’

In another video shared by Portnoy, the pair put on a wager together for a combined $9,000 split down the middle, as Cooper jokes: ‘I’m never gonna pay him back’.

Barstool picked up Cooper’s hit podcast back in 2017, airing it for four years before she put pen to paper on a three-year deal worth $60m with music-streaming giants Spotify in 2021.

The Call Me Daddy podcast now boasts over two million followers on Instagram and just under 900,000 on YouTube, while also going down as the most-listened to women’s podcast on Spotify since being signed by the company.

Portnoy, meanwhile, recently opened up on being spotted on a date with a 25-year-old blonde at Monday’s Celtics-Heat basketball game, admitting he ‘panicked’ after being caught on camera.
