Rachel Blackmore has paid tribute to A Plus Tard — the horse who helped her make history — after his retirement was announced on Thursday.

Blackmore became the first female jockey to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup when riding A Plus Tard to a 15-length victory over stablemate Minella Indo in 2022.

A Plus Tard was also the first of Blackmore’s 14 Cheltenham Festival winners when he won the Centenary Novices’ Handicap Chase.

In her Betfair column, Blackmore said: ‘He had everything you could ask for in a horse — speed, stamina and he was a really accurate jumper. To feel him accelerate like he did after the last in the Gold Cup is a feeling I’ll never forget, I feel so lucky to have been on his back.

‘He was incredible and such a special horse.’
