The racing world has been thrown into mourning with news of the death of highly respected New Zealand jockey Johnathan Parkes at the age of just 35.

The champion jockey rode more than 1000 winners in New Zealand, including 62 black type races and 12 at Group One level.

The Kiwi star, who reportedly passed away on Friday night, last rode at Hastings on September 7.

The racing community gathered together for an emotional tribute at Ellerslie Racecourse on Saturday.

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing acknowledged the passing of Parkes with a statement.

‘On behalf of the New Zealand Racing industry, NZTR is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of highly respected jockey Johnathan Parkes overnight,’ began the statement.

‘Our thoughts are with Johnathan’s closest family and friends at this time.

‘Johnathan was one of our best, riding over 1,000 winners in New Zealand. Parkes won 62 black type races including 12 Group 1s.’

 ‘Support will be provided to jockeys and other affected participants across the weekends race meetings.’

 The stunning news has sparked tributes from around the racing world.

Thoroughbred owner Steve Donovan tweeted: ‘Absolutely stunned to hear of the passing of NZ Jockey Johnathan Parkes. He was really talented, he rode a couple of horses for me including Tiptronic, I would have put him up every time. Again if anyone is struggling out there, make a call. Talk to someone. Its never that bad.’

Broadcaster Aidan Rodley posted: ‘Twelve-time Group One-winning jockey with more than 1000 wins to his name. Just tragic; awful news. Thoughts with so many in NZ racing grieving Johnathan’s death.’

The Australian Jockey’s Association posted: ‘On behalf of the AJ A we send our prayers and love to the NZ racing community following the passing of Great NZ jockey Johnathan Parkes. RIP champion.’

Another racing fan posted: ‘Very sad to hear the passing of Johnathan Parkes. JP was one of NZs very best, riding over 1000 winners. Parkes won 62 black type races, including 12 Group Ones, and also won on I WISH I WIN on debut. Our thoughts go out to his family.’
