Jayarebe, a horse trained by Brian Meehan, has collapsed and died after competing at the Breeders’ Cup in California on Saturday.
The race organizers confirmed the tragic news on social media, saying: ‘During the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Del Mar, Jayarebe (FR) suffered what appears to have been a cardiac event on the gallop out.
‘He was immediately attended to by a team of veterinary experts led by Dr. Brent Cassady, but unfortunately passed away.
‘His jockey, Sean Levey, was uninjured. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Jayarebe’s connections and the many fans whose lives he touched.’
Dr. Al Ruggles, the on-call veterinarian for American Equine Racing Practioners, told NBC: ‘Jayarebe collapsed on the racetrack while he was being pulled up. These kind of events are hard to predict.’
A spokesman for Del Mar Thoroughbred Club was quoted as saying by the San Diego Union-Tribune: ‘The initial report from the vet is that it was a sudden death, probably a heart attack.’
The horse finished seventh in the field of 13 in the race itself.
