An Australian gambler will be hoping that European superstar Vauban will win the $8million dollar Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, with close to million dollars riding on the result.
An unnamed Ladbrokes customer placed a $1000 bet on a five-leg multi on September 23 and has come up trumps on the first four legs.
The punter started things off by betting on Kiwi sprint queen Imperatriz to win the Moir Stakes on September 29 (at $2).
The following day, they had kept the multi alive by picking Collingwood to win the AFL premiership (at $1.70), before Ace Impact came through with the goods in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in France (at $4.33).
The punter had next picked Without A Fight to win the $5 million Caulfield Cup (at $8), edging West Wind Blows into second place in a captivating finish.

The final leg of the multi is Vauban to win on Tuesday in Australia’s most famous horserace (at $7).
If successful, the gambler’s return will be $989,120.

The six-year-old gelding, trained by Willie Mullins, has firmed into $4.60 favourtism ahead of the race that stops a nation.
Another racing enthusiast will be delirious if Vauban salutes over 3200m after a bet of $320,000 – split with odds of $4.80 and $4 – was taken.
Prominent owner Nick Williams – who has Serpentine and Cleveland in this year’s race – believes the pre-race favourite will take some stopping.
‘I think it’s as good a thing as I’ve seen in the Melbourne Cup, that I can remember,’ he said.
‘He is a tough, older horse. Properly seasoned and beautifully conditioned.’

Mullins is quietly confident of winning his first Melbourne Cup, with his star performer to be ridden by Ryan Moore.
‘He’s the best chance we’ve ever had and will ever have,’ he said of Vauban.
‘Everything has gone right…the quarantine, even the draw.
‘We just need to break [jump] now and get into a position, but I’ll leave that to the jockeys. They know the track and opposition better than I do.’
