SOUPER SMART (c, 2, Super Saver–Be Smart {GISP, $137,200}, by Smarty Jones) was second while making his debut over the turf at Kentucky Downs Sept. 7. The even-money favorite was away alertly from his outside post and had a slim lead while three wide down the backstretch through an opening quarter in :23.16. He opened up a clear advantage without being asked on the bend and sailed home an easy 4 1/4-length winner. One Thirty Nine (Creative Cause) was second. Souper Smart, a $200,000 KEESEP yearling, sold for $325,000 after working a furlong in :10 2/5 at this year’s Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale. Be Smart, second in the 2008 GI Darley Alcibiades S., produced a filly by Fed Biz in 2016 and a colt by Carpe Diem this year. She was bred back to Orb.
