RACING DIGEST

  • John Gosden’s racing digest unbeaten Palace Pier is the 8-11 favourite for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot after another of his main rivals pulled out because of the soft ground. On Wednesday, 2,000 Guineas winner Kameko was confirmed a non-runner and yesterday Saeed Bin Suroor-trained Benbatl joined him as an absentee. Benbatl was 7-2 favourite for the QEII Stakes 12 months ago but trailed home last on very soft ground. Bin Suroor said: ‘There is no point running him at Ascot. We ran him last year and he hated it.’ 
  • Trainer Aidan O’Brien has booked William Buick to ride Derby winner Serpentine in the Champion Stakes. O’Brien also runs 7-4 favourite Magical (Ryan Moore) and Japan (Colin Keane). 
  • Champion amateur jump jockey David Maxwell is likely to be on the sidelines for around eight weeks after suffering concussion and fracturing a vertebra in a fall at Wetherby on Wednesday. 
  • Trainer Alexandra Dunn secured a mammoth 2,277-1 double at Wincanton with victories for The Eagle’s Nest (33-1) and Thahab Ifraj (66-1). Dunn said: ‘I know they were big prices but it is not a big surprise to me because they had been working well.’
