Seamie Heffernan: unsure of who he will ride in the Derby

TRUSTED Ballydoyle stalwart Seamie Heffernan is in a better position than most to establish the pecking order among Aidan O’Brien’s Derby contenders and the rider is leaning towards the unbeaten US Army Ranger as being the stable’s best prospect.
“If I was to sum up our Derby team, I’d say I’ve been impressed and disappointed by them all. US Army Ranger is still very unexposed and nobody knows how good he might be,” Heffernan said.
“We don’t dip the tank at home. Aidan trains in a way that makes all the horses feel like champions. He saves that little bit for them to show what they’re made of on the track,” the rider added.
This year’s ride
Heffernan has missed out on riding in the Derby at Epsom only twice in the past ten runnings and he looks sure to be called upon this year as O’Brien still has eight colts engaged in the race.
Heffernan does not know, however, which horse he will be riding in the Epsom Classic on Saturday week.
“It’s a great position to be in that decisions are made for me and I know Aidan is always on my side and fighting my corner,” Heffernan said. “He always does the best he can for me. He’ll put me on the horse he thinks suits my style best.”
