- Hayley Turner rode a double as Ladies’ team secured victory in the Shergar Cup
Hayley Turner’s love affair with the Shergar Cup is stronger than ever, as she led the Ladies’ team to another victory in the annual jockeys’ challenge.
This is the Ascot meeting that Turner, the leading female Flat rider of her generation, prioritises and that approach reaped dividends as her mount New Image got up in the final strides of the Mile, the final race, to wrestle the prize away from the European riders.
The Ladies’ team comprised Turner, Joanna Mason and Marie Velon, with Turner winning the Silver Saddle for the second consecutive year.
Turner rode a double, with Ranch Hand taking the Stayers’ Handicap on a day dominated by female riders, as Rachel Venniker won the Dash on Holkham Bay and Rachel King partnered Insanity in the Challenge.
‘I do end up with better rides than I’d usually get,’ Turner said. ‘It shows it’s the animals that get you there and not just the jockeys.’
