PSYCHEDELIC FUNK missed the opportunity for a hat-trick at Naas on Sunday, as a high temperature forced him out of the Listed Rochestown Stakes. However, trainer Ger Lyons still intends to take the colt to Royal Ascot for the Coventry Stakes, for which he is a general 6-1 chance.
Lyons told At The Races: “There was everything to lose and nothing to gain – two weeks away [Royal Ascot] is the most important date and that’s what we’ll keep him for.
“He’s the best we’ve had at this stage. He’s very straightforward and when Aidan (O’Brien) comes up to you and is high on him, you know you’ve a nice colt.”
Ascot aim for Beverley winner
The Norfolk Stakes could be on Prince of Lir‘s agenda after an impressive debut winat Beverley last weekend.
A £170,000 purchase at the breeze-ups, the Robert Cowell-trained son of Kodiac beat a useful field by a length-and-a-quarter in the Brian Yeardley Continental Two Year Old Trophy, and is a 10-1 chance for the Norfolk.
Luke Morris, who rode the colt at Beverley, said: “He’s a very nice colt and I thought it was a very good performance from a newcomer to beat some experienced rivals.
“I spoke to Robert after the race and he was very pleased. Before the race he was very positive and holds him in high regard, I think Royal Ascot will be the plan. I thought he was worth a crack at the Norfolk but I’ll leave that to connections.”
