Eyes on the Preis

One of the last of the European Group 1 prizes is up for grabs at Munich on Wednesday with the G1 Pastorius-Grosser Preis von Bayern featuring all the leading domestic heavyweights in the middle-distance category. They are headed by the leader Dschingis Secret (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), winner of the G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin at Hoppegarten on Aug. 13 and G2 Prix Foy at Chantilly Sept. 10. Understandably, after the latter performance in which Cloth of Stars (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) was 1 1/2 lengths behind in second, hopes were high ahead of the Oct. 1 G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe but Horst Pudwill’s bay was only sixth as that rival was second. A head in front of his seventh-placed compatriot Iquitos (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) in the French feature, he was confirming the form of the G2 Grosser Hansa-Preis in which they were first and second respectively at Hamburg July 1. Iquitos had subsequently captured the 10-furlong G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis here July 30 and finished second to last year’s winner of this contest, Guignol (Ger) (Cape Cross {Ire}), in the Sept. 3 G1 Grosser Preis Von Baden. That was also the outcome of the 11-furlong G2 Grosser Preis der Badischen Wirtschaft May 28 and it may be that Guignol is under-estimated in this repeat bid as he comes here fresh having avoided the Arc.

Outside of the big three, there is the 3-year-old Waldgeist (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), who has yet to add a win to his juvenile high when collecting the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud but who has traded blows with some of the best this term. A short-head second to Brametot (Ire) (Rajsaman {Fr}) in the June 4 G1 Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly and fourth in the G1 Irish Derby at The Curragh July 1, Gestut Ammerland’s colourbearer was a neck second to the exposed older horse Danehill Kodiac (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) in a renewal of the G3 Cumberland Lodge S. that he should have won at Ascot Oct. 7 and he has a question to answer now.
