Evans to Call Races in Dubai

By Alan Carasso

Craig Evans, who spent 10 years as the lead commentator for the Singapore Turf Club before returning to his Australian roots late last year, will be the voice of the tracks of the Emirates Racing Association for the 2017-2018 season, replacing his compatriot Terry Spargo. He will call the races at all ERA tracks, including the flagship Dubai International Racing Carnival at Meydan.

A native of Carnavon, Western Australia, Evans began his commentating career some three decades ago and became the principal greyhound caller from 1993-2006. Since departing Singapore, Evans has been working for Racing Victoria, Racing.com and Radio RSN in Melbourne. Evans was among the three finalists for the feature race calling position with Racing Victoria. He was also one of two candidates to audition for the then-open position at Santa Anita vacated by Trevor Denman.

“Dubai World Cup night has always been my favourite night of racing after attending covering Rocket Man (Aus) (Viscount {Aus}) three years in a row,” Evans said in an email. “I’m excited to be part of the night and the full season in the United Arab Emirates. Calling five very different tracks will be challenging but will keep the five-month season very interesting.”

The United Arab Emirates racing season begins at Jebel Ali Racecourse next Friday, Nov. 3. The first Meydan meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 9, while the Dubai International Racing Calendar runs from Jan. 11 through Dubai World Cup day Saturday, Mar. 31, 2018.
