Doncaster want to test the next stage in the return of crowds to British racecourses at next month’s St Leger meeting.

Plans for 5,000 spectators to attend Saturday’s final day of Glorious Goodwood were scrapped after Boris Johnson postponed the easing of restrictions by a fortnight, which cost the course a ‘six-figure sum’, said managing director Adam Waterworth.

York have cancelled plans for spectators at their four-day Ebor Meeting, which starts on August 19.

Doncaster’s four-day meeting starts on September 9 and Mark Spincer, managing director of their operating company’s racing division, said: ‘I will be putting forward that Doncaster becomes the next pilot.

‘If York can’t now do it, the next big event would be the St Leger.

‘We’ll all we can and work with all the representative bodies to have the chance to have the next trial. The 14-day postponement in lifting restrictions would still give us the best part of four weeks to get ready.’
