Wide-Open Spinster is Anybody’s Guess

A full field of 13 with only three previous graded stakes winners will enter the gate with a chance of making a statement in the ‘Win and You’re In’ GI Juddmonte Spinster S. at Keeneland Sunday.

The top four finishers of the GIII Locust Grove S. Sept. 16 return to face each other with Romantic Vision (Lemon Drop Kid) looking to get the best of her rivals once more after recording her first stakes win there. Her lone try in Grade I company came on the GI Kentucky Oaks undercard in the La Troienne S., where she finished second at 15-1 behind MGSW Big World (Custom for Carlos).

The other three who are trying to turn the tables on Romantic Vision include: Locust Grove runner-up Blue Prize (Arg) (Pure Prize), who was a Group 1 winner in her native Argentina prior to coming to the States; Locust Grove third Tiger Moth (Street Sense), the GIII Groupie Doll S. winner at Ellis Park Aug. 13; and Locust Grove fourth Mo d’Amour (Uncle Mo), whose most recent win came in the 2016 Busher S. at Aqueduct.

Juddmonte Farms’ Lockdown (First Defence) has been the most consistent in the field, earning placings in the GI Kentucky Oaks May 5 and the GII Mother Goose S. July 1 and she was most recently third after setting the pace in the GI Cotillion S. Sept. 23.

The closest any entrant in the field has come to a Grade I win on the resume is Martini Glass (Kitalpha), who almost pulled off the upset of the year at her home track when a close second to champion Songbird (Medaglia d’Oro) in the GI Delaware H. in July.
