DERMOT WELD has trained the winner of the Connacht Hotel Amateur Riders’ Handicap (7.20), the feature race on the opening day of the Galway festival, a remarkable seven times and he expects a ‘big run’ from his leading contender Time To Inspire on Monday evening.

Time To Inspire, who is a half-brother to Group 2 winner Forgotten Rules, won at the Galway festival last year and Weld revealed that this race has been the long-term plan for the unexposed four-year-old.

He said: “On home work, Time To Inspire would be our main hope. This has been the plan for him all year as he handled the track so well at the meeting 12 months ago when winning a 1m4f maiden by ten lengths under Finny Maguire.

“We’ve got Finny back on board now and everything is in place for a really big run. He has a nice draw in stall five and conditions should be fine. His work has been good and he has plenty in his favour.”

Betting news

Given his profile and his trainer’s superb record at the meeting, bookmakers have unsurpringly taken a cautious view in pricing up Time To Inspire and make him the clear 4-1 favourite. Weld’s other representative Zafayan can be backed at 25-1.

“Zafayan is a good horse and that is why he is top weight,” Weld said. “However, he’s not overly big so carrying such a burden won’t be easy.”

Weather Watch and Gusty Rocky were the horses for money on Monday morning.

Gusty Rocky has attracted each-way support and is into 12-1 from 20-1, while Weather Watch is the 9-1 second favourite after early quotes of 14-1 quickly dried up.

Weather Watch is trained by Jessica Harrington who said: “He’s got a good draw and will love the good ground and the trip. He’s lower in the ratings than he used to be and ran very well at the Curragh last time. He’s going there in good form.”

The going on the Flat course at Galway is good, good to yielding in places – the ground remains good on the jumps course – following light showers on Monday.
