USA: Sunset glows in Debutante for Ward

Report: USA, Saturday

Del Mar: Del Mar Debutante (Grade 1) 7f, AW, 2yo fillies

ROYAL ASCOT regular Wesley Ward was celebrating a Grade 1 victory on Saturday when Albany Stakes runner-up Sunset Glow (Victor Espinoza) outfought Her Emmynency to win the Del Mar Debutante.

Second to Cursory Glance at the royal meeting, the odds-on favourite bullied her way through a small opening between horses at the head of the stretch but then had to battle to hold off the runner-up by a neck. Sunset Glow stopped the clock in 1m23.12s for the 7f.

“I took a chance with her today – I tried something different,” said Espinoza. “Going seven-eighths and seeing all the speed in there, I thought my best chance was to take her back and then make a run.

“I know she’s been used to running up front, but I thought we’d have to come from the back. I’m sure glad it worked out. When you’ve got a favourite like this, it’s good when it works out. But she gives me confidence; she responds to what you want to do. There was never a doubt she would go through those holes. No hesitation. I’m proud of her for that. She got a little tired at the end, but she’s the kind that will probably run on.”
