Twenty Go Forward For Sprint Cup

By Daithi Harvey

A stellar cast of sprinters remain in contention for Saturday’s G1 Sprint Cup at Haydock. Household names who appear among the 20 sprinters left in the six furlong contest include G1 Darley July Cup 1-2-3 Harry Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Limato (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}) and Brando (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). Clive Cox has expressed his satisfaction with Harry Angel ahead of Saturday’s task and he commented, “Harry himself is in very good form. He’s had a great season and I think the way he has been campaigned, he is still progressing. The July Cup was his most professional performance to date.” Cox also dispelled any concerns about the ground or the track for the Godolphin owned colt. “You’ve got to see positives in going back to Haydock. He broke a track record there when winning the [G2] Sandy Lane Stakes in May. As for the ground, he won the Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury on ‘soft,’ so he’s able to win at group 2 level on that sort of ground. What we don’t want are extremes of ground,” he added.

The Tin Man (GB) (Equiano {Fr}) and Tasleet (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), first and second in the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot are also on target for the race. Despite Aidan O’Brien mentioning the G2 Derrinstown Stud Flying Five S. at The Curragh on Sunday being the likely target for Caravaggio (Scat Daddy) the Ballydoyle trainer has still left the G1 Commonwealth Cup winner in the Haydock race presumably as a second option. O’Brien also has Spirit Of Valor (War Front), Intelligence Cross (War Front), Washington DC (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and Cougar Mountain (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in the lineup. Another fascinating contender could be Charlie Appleby’s Blue Point (Ire) (Shamardal) who has a victory over likely race favourite Harry Angel to his credit this year.
