Turnbull Next For Winx

Australian Horse of the Year Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) is set to visit Flemington for the first time on Oct. 7 for the G1 Turnbull S. in what will be her final tune-up for a three-peat in the G1 Cox Plate. Trainer Chris Waller said in a statement that Winx also has an option in the G3 Craven Plate at Randwick the following weekend.

“The sole reason for running [in the Turnbull] as the most likely option is simply based on the timing of the current program, which will provide her with three weeks between runs from the [Sept. 16 G1] George Main to the Turnbull, and another three weeks into the Cox Plate for her fifth run of the campaign,” Waller said. Waller also said he would remove the 6-year-old mare’s earmuffs, which had been added to focus her in her last two starts.

Waller also addressed the topic of a potential overseas campaign for Winx, who will stay in Australia until at least late March of 2018.

“To ease speculation on her future beyond 2017, I look forward to the autumn and a possible trip overseas but at this stage no decision on this will be made until after the [G1] George Ryder S. [in March],” he said. “Providing she is well, she will run during The Championships in the G1 Queen Elizabeth S. and look to target a race during the Royal Ascot carnival or be freshened up subsequent to the George Ryder S. and be targeted towards a European campaign containing three races over a range of distances. Obviously this is a long-term plan and my team and I would much prefer to focus on the current campaign as we head towards such an important time of the Australian racing season.”
