Tosen Stardom Gets His Group 1

Trainer Darren Weir admitted to being relieved after former Japanese galloper Tosen Stardom recorded his first Group 1 win in Caulfield’s Toorak H. on Saturday. A dual Group 3 winner in his native country, Tosen Stardom has endured a stop-start campaign since joining Weir last August, having been aggravated by injury. The entire has nonetheless flashed talent, having been second to Black Heart Bart (Aus) (Blackfriars {Aus}) in the G1 Futurity S. in February and to Palentino (Aus) (Teofilo {Ire}) in the G2 Blamey S. in March. Fourth in the G2 PB Lawrence S. first-up this campaign, Tosen Stardom was beaten just 1 3/4 lengths when third behind Saturday’s The Everest runner-up Vega Magic (Aus) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in the G1 Memsie S. on Sept. 2, and prior to this he was sixth in Caulfield’s G1 Sir Rupert Clarke S. on Oct. 1. Racing on the outside in the second half of the field, the bay was hung widest of all coming off the turn but appeared full of run under Damian Lane. Let loose down the middle of the track, he worked his way to the lead approaching the 100 and held off a facile rally from Sovereign Nation.

“It’s such a relief because this horse has everything it takes to be one of the great stallions,” Weir told Racing.com after recording a Group 1 double on the card. “He’s got the pedigree, the ability and now he’s got his Group 1.”

Weir said Tosen Stardom was not certain to take on Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) in the G1 Cox Plate in two weeks’ time, with the G1 Longines Mile the following weekend also an option.

Pedigree Notes…

Tosen Stardom becomes the 31st Group 1 winner worldwide for Japanese-based supersire Deep Impact. He is a half-brother to Neo Stardom, who picked up black-type when third in Hanshin’s Listed Marguerite S. Their four-time winning dam Admire Kirameki’s last recorded progeny is an as-yet unraced 2-year-old filly by Deep Impact named Centelleo (Jpn). Admire Kirameki is a half-sister to G1 Tenno Sho winner Tosen Jordan (Jpn) (Jungle Pocket {Jpn}) and Group 2 winner and G1 Tokyo Yushun third Tosen Homareboshi (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).
