THE three-day Brighton festival starts this afternoon, with today’s highlight the John Smith’s Brighton Mile Challenge Trophy (3.50).

Mark Johnston has won the race three times since 2009, and this year relies on Skytrain to continue his good record.

The four-year-old finished third in a handicap at Glorious Goodwood last week, and Johnston’s son Charlie said: “He ran really well at Goodwood. He travelled strongly through the race and Joe [Fanning] came back and said if something could have given him a lead for another furlong he would have gone even closer.

“This looks a step down in class, and hopefully he’ll go well again.”

As well as Brighton, there are Flat fixtures at Kempton, Lingfield, Pontefract, Sligo and Yarmouth.
