The Road Back

Not in the same formidable mood as he was last year so far in 2017, Sheikhzayedroad (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) could be building slowly to a peak again as he bids to defend his title in Friday’s G2 Doncaster Cup. Fourth last time in the G2 Lonsdale Cup over two miles at York three weeks ago, Mohammed Jaber’s veteran has stable confidence behind him. “He’ll have conditions to suit and he seems in good order,” trainer David Simcock said. “We’ve done little with him and hopefully he can run very well. The one thing he is, is consistent. I’m never disappointed and if he doesn’t win it won’t be the end of the world. He’s like me, he’s getting a little bit older and slower.”

In front of Sheikhzayedroad in the Lonsdale Cup was Montaly (GB) (Yeats {Ire}), who has a penalty to carry here as a result of that game win, while the 2015 winner Pallasator (GB) (Motivator {GB}) has to halt a general regression as he looks to put a tame effort when sixth in Deauville’s G2 Prix Kergorlay behind him Aug. 20. Trainer Sir Mark Prescott’s assistant William Butler said, “Over the years he has behaved terribly and won and behaved terribly and run terribly, so the truth is he’s the only one who knows what is going to happen. There are bits and pieces of excuses for his runs this year, but we’d like to see him run better at Doncaster.”
