The Flying Fight

Two of Britain’s fast-ascending trainers Karl Burke and Clive Cox go head-to-head in Friday’s G2 Wainwrights Flying Childers S. at Doncaster with Havana Grey (GB) (Havana Gold {Ire}) and Heartache (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}) in what appears a match on paper. The former captured the G3 Molecomb S. at Glorious Goodwood Aug. 2 before running second to stablemate Unfortunately (Ire) (Society Rock {Ire}) in the G1 Prix Morny at Deauville 18 days later and Burke said, “He’s fresh and well and came back from the Prix Morny in great form. Clive Cox’s filly is obviously very quick. Whether she’ll be as quick as Havana Grey over five furlongs, I don’t know, but it will be an interesting clash.”

Heartache took the G2 Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot June 21 before finishing third when she did not enjoy the run of the race behind Unfortunately in the 5 1/2-furlong G2 Prix Robert Papin at Maisons-Laffitte July 23 and Cox commented, “We’re delighted with how she’s bounced back after initially coming back from France wrong. She got a bump during the race over there and it was quite obvious when she came home that she was lame behind. She had a deep-seated muscle problem. We’re much happier with her now and I think she goes there in really good nick. We’d appreciated if the ground kept drying. We’re hopeful it will with the high winds and hopefully the rain will stay away.”
