Teofilo’s Humidor Takes The Makybe Diva

Returning to the scene of his G1 Australian Cup victory last season, Humidor stamped himself as one to watch for the spring with a sizzling last to first victory in the Makybe Diva S. Starting out his career in his native New Zealand, Humidor won the G3 Manawatu Classic at three and finished a narrow second in the G1 Livamol Ormond Memorial at four. The gelding was ninth in his first Australian try, incidentally at Flemington, in last spring’s G1 Cantala S., but hinted at better things to come in the autumn with runner-up efforts in the G3 Carlyon Cup and G2 Peter Young S. before besting the smart mare Jameka (Aus) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) in the Australian Cup over 2000 metres. Jameka turned the tables over 400 metres further in the G1 The BMW at Rosehill two weeks later in what proved to be Humidor’s final run of the season. Humidor was off the board in his first two runs of the spring when sixth behind Hartnell (GB) (Authorized {Ire}) in the G2 PB Lawrence S. on Aug. 19 and when eighth in the G1 Memsie S. on Sept. 2, both over an inadequate 1400 metres, but there was no doubt as to his superiority on Saturday. Racing last about 12 lengths off the pace initially, Humidor was forced widest of all coming off the turn and unleashed a furious rally under Damian Lane upon straightening. He first overtook his more fancied stablemate Black Heart Bart passing the 100 before sprinting past favoured Hartnell to win by 3.3 lengths going away. Hartnell had a no-excuses run, sitting second throughout, but could not match strides with the winner after inheriting the lead in the stretch.

The win completed a remarkable double for Lane, who two races earlier had crashed to the turf with Limestone (Aus) (Helmet {Aus}) after clipping heels in the G2 Danehill S. for Weir. Limestone emerged unscathed and Lane came out the next race to win the G2 Let’s Elope S. with Sword Of Light (Aus) (New Approach {Ire}), followed by the win aboard Humidor.

“He’s a great talent and he’s really starting to put it together now,” Lane told Racing.com. “He started to travel up under me turning for home and I thought I was the winner a long way out.”

Weir said the Oct. 21 G1 Caulfield Cup would be next for Humidor. The gelding has been allocated 56kg for that feature, two kilograms fewer than Hartnell.

Pedigree Notes…

Humidor is the fifth foal and the lone stakes winner for Zalika, who is a granddaughter of the three-time Group 1-winning sprinter Habibti. That mare never produced a stakes winner herself, but she is the second or third dam of seven stakes winners which, in addition to Humidor include the German and Italian Group 1 winner Morshdi (Slip Anchor). Zalika’s latest produce is a 2016 colt by Makfi (GB). Click for the free Arion.co.nz catalogue-style pedigree.
