TAKE COVER might have been a seven-year-old with only eight runs on turf before the off but he sprinted to the biggest win of his career to open up a tilt at the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes later in the month.
Extortionist chased him home to take second place at 5-1 with Moviesta, the 9-2 favourite and last year’s winner, third.
Paddy Power trimmed the odds about the winner to 12-1 (from 25) for the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York on August 22.
That will be the next step on a wonderful journey for a jubilant winning trainer David Griffiths.
“I am delighted. It is unbelievable,” said South Yorkshire-based Griffiths, who trains the winner for Norcroft Park Stud.
“I’ve always said he was a good horse and he just keeps getting better.
“It is my first Group winner and this is great. He likes York and as long as we get him back fine we’d go for the Nunthorpe.”
Winning rider Andrea Atzeni said: “He has a lot of speed and he likes quick ground and battles well.
“I wasn’t sure whether I’d won or not as I was so far away from the others. When he gets his head in front he is a hard horse to pass. I don’t think I’ve ever sat on a horse as quick as this.”
