AWTAAD and The Gurkha could both be given the chance to overhaul Galileo Gold in the Qipco Sussex Stakes on Wednesday after finishing behind him in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last month.
All three were among the 14 horses left in the 1m Group 1 contest, the highlight of the Qatar Goodwood festival which starts on Tuesday.
Galileo Gold will be attempting to complete the 2,000 Guineas – St James’s Palace – Sussex Stakes treble which only Rock Of Gibraltar, Henrythenavigator and Frankel have completed this century. He is the 7-4 favourite to do so.
The Gurkha is one of four horses remaining in the Sussex Stakes for Aidan O’Brien, along with The Happy Prince, Alice Springs and Long Island Sound, as the trainer bids to win the race for the first time since 2009. Gleneagles was a late non-runner for him last year.
The Gurkha is the 9-4 second favourite for the Sussex Stakes with Awtaad and Ribchester third in the betting at 8-1. Ribchester will be bidding to go two better in the race than Richard Fahey’s runner last year Gabrial, who was third and is likely to run again on Wednesday.
Gabrial was beaten into third place by Solow, who remains absent with injury, and Arod last year. The second could return, although owners Qatar Racing also have Lightning Spear in the race.
