Spell Likely For Oscietra

By Daithi Harvey

Oscietra (Aus) (Exceed And Excel (Aus}) the first foal, runner and winner from the mighty Black Caviar (Aus) (Bel Esprit {Aus}) failed to build on her promising last time out victory, finishing only ninth when making her third start at Flemington on Wednesday. The Lindsay Park trained filly faded badly in the last furlong of the 1000m event over the straight course and her co-trainer David Hayes was at a loss to explain her poor performance. “There doesn’t appear to be anything wrong,” Hayes told Racing And Sports. “Her breathing was good and her action was fine but she was weak over the last 200 metres.”

Oscietra made a promising start to her racing career finishing third over the same course and distance Jan. 1 before opening her account in straightforward style at Geelong in August. Following her defeat on Wednesday Hayes feels the 3-year-old needs a time out from training to enable her to develop more physically. “I’ll check her out tonight and tomorrow morning and I’m recommending a spell. Spring is a good time to be racing but it’s also a great time for an immature horse to be out. The pastures are very strong and she’ll get the benefits of that now,” he added.
