Snitzel Colt Pulls A Stunt

The dream run of last season’s record-breaking champion sire Snitzel (Aus) continued on Saturday when his representatives filled first and third in Saturday’s G1 Golden Rose S. Trapeze Artist (Aus) got the win at 41-1 while his Gerald Ryan-trained stablemate Menari (Aus), the 7-5 favourite, checked in third. The Snitzel colts were split by the filly Champagne Cuddles (Aus), who is by Snitzel’s Arrowfield barnmate and fellow Redoute’s Choice (Aus) son Not A Single Doubt (Aus).

Trapeze Artist indicated his talent from the outset last season, winning on debut at Beaumont and taking Canberra’s G3 Black Opal S. in his third outing. He was sixth in the G1 Golden Slipper before finishing third in the G1 Inglis Sires’ S., completing the trifecta for his sire that day. Tame efforts when sixth and fourth, respectively, in the G3 Up And Coming S. and G2 Stan Fox S. to start the season saw Trapeze Artist dismissed in the betting on Saturday, but the dark bay pulled out an eye-catching performance to win with ease.

Menari was out of the barriers on top, but was soon overtaken by a keen Perast (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) and The Mission (Aus) (Choisir {Aus}), and he was content to bide his time while the filly Formality (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) also overtook him on the outside. Meanwhile, Trapeze Artist sat right on the favourites heels, about six lengths off the lead, as Perast and The Mission dueled through sizzling fractions. Tye Angland was perched five wide on Trapeze Artist as they swung into the straight and was on even terms with Menari at the 400. Trapeze Artist simply had more to give when asked the question, and he strode out to win geared-down. Champagne Cuddles, last early, ate into the hot pace late on to grab second.

Gerald Ryan, who also trained Snitzel, said, “I said he’d run top three. He’s beaten them easily. No one ever takes any notice of him. The only one who has talked him up is me and no one listens to me.”

Ryan admitted that Trapeze Artist is not a work horse.

“I’ve been telling everyone he’s been flying under the radar because of the path I’ve taken with him. Since his run a fortnight ago his coat has come good, his work has been bloody terrible as usual. On his work he wouldn’t win a maiden.”

Ryan said Trapeze Artist would back up in next weekend’s G1 Epsom H. He said Menari sat too close to the fast pace.

“[Menari] was too close on a hot speed but take nothing away from the winner, he was four wide all the way.”

It was the first Golden Rose win for Ryan and Angland, with the rider having had a few close calls in the 3-year-old sprinting feature.

“It’s the first time I have ridden him,” Angland said. “I got onto Menari’s back from an awkward gate due to nice speed in the race. I actually had to pull off his back because I was going too good. This race has been a bit of a killer for me. I was caught three and four wide on Scissor Kick and got run down late by Hallowed Crown [to finish second] and on Press Statement we had no luck [fifth], so it’s good to change that luck today.”

Pedigree Notes…

Trapeze Artist is the second named foal out of Treppes, whose most recently recorded produce is a yearling colt by Zoustar (Aus). Though Treppes didn’t manage to win herself, she is a half-sister to Crawl (Aus) (Dr Grace {NZ}), who overcame his name and won the G1 Stradbroke H. She is also a half to the stakes-winning Old Man (Aus) (Dr Grace {NZ}) and Step (Aus) (Grand Lodge), the dam of G2 AAMI Vase S. winner Marching (Aus) (Commands {Aus}) and listed winner Gait (Aus) (Anabaa).
