FLAT jockeys’ championship leader Jim Crowley has six opportunities on Friday to set a new monthly record for winners after notching his 45th success of the month at Chelmsford on Thursday.
Crowley, 38, joined a select list of riders to have ridden 45 winners in a calendar month matching the figures post by riding greats Fred Archer, in June 1884, and Sir Gordon Richards, in August 1949.
Racing Post historian John Randall said: “It won’t be possible to say Crowley has definitely broken the record even if he surpasses 45 because the record for the most winners in a month by a jockey or trainer in Britain isn’t something anyone has ever researched.”
Crowley will be going in search of his 46th winner of September at Newcastle on Friday evening, albeit he now only has six chances of success with two mounts being non-runners.
Champion fighting tough
Reigning champion Silvestre de Sousa, who trails Crowley by nine winners, 118 to 127, is ramping up his itinerary as he tries to chase down the championship leader with two weeks remaining in the contest.
After two rides at Ascot on Friday afternoon, De Sousa makes the 250-mile flight to Newcastle for four rides kicking off in the 6.20pm.
He said on Friday: “It’s a trip I’ve not done before and it’s two hours in a plane. There are landing strips close to both courses so hopefully it can be done. I have some fancied rides so we’ll give it ago.”
De Sousa will be flying between courses again on Saturday as he begins the afternoon at Newmarket before helicoptering to the evening meeting at Wolverhampton.
The Stobart-backed jockeys’ championship ends on October 15.
