Shirocco’s Windstoss Blows Hot in Cologne’s Europa

By Sean Cronin

Windstoss bettered a second in the June 11 G2 Oppenheim-Union-Rennen, going 11 furlongs here, with a career high upped to this trip in Hamburg’s July 2 G1 Deutsches Derby and lined up for this coming back off a fourth in Baden-Baden’s Sept. 3 G1 Grosser Preis von Baden. The sophomore was steadied at the outset and settled into a smooth rhythm keeping company with stablemate Colomano in rear until sent wide with two others along the back straight. Cutting back to occupy fourth rounding the home turn, he was sent wide again to claim the stands’ side rail and the lead passing the two pole and surged clear under whipless coaxing in the closing stages to provide jockey Adrie de Vries with a third celebration in the contest.
Windstoss, who becomes the first G1 Deutsches Derby hero to land this event since Belenus (Ger) (Lomitas {GB}) in 1999, is the first foal bred from Wellenspiel (Ger) (Sternkonig {Ire}), herself a winning daughter of MSW G2 German 1000 Guineas runner-up Well Known (Ger) (Konigsstuhl {Ger}), which has Konigsstuhl feature 3×3 in the winner’s pedigree. Well Known is the dam of five black-type performers headed by G1 Preis von Europa victor Well Made (Ger) (Mondrian {Ger}) and the stakes-winning Weichsel (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}). His third dam Well Proved (Ger) (Prince Ippi {Ger}) garnered the G3 German 1000 Guineas and produced G1 Oaks d’Italia third Well Minded (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) and G3 Prix de Psyche victress Welluna (Ger) (Lagunas {GB}), who in turn is the granddam of last year’s G3 Preis der Winterkonigin heroine Well Spoken (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}). Wellenspiel has also produced the hitherto unraced 2-year-old colt Weltstar (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), the yearling colt Walerian (Ger) (Reliable Man {GB}) and the colt foal Worrick (Ger) (Kamsin {Ger}).
