Seymourdini Looks to Remain Perfect in 2017

By Christie DeBernardis

Iris Smith Stable’s Seymourdini (Bernardini) has been unstoppable this season, reeling off a trio of impressive victories, and he hopes to continue that hot streak in a loaded renewal of Belmont’s GIII Bold Ruler H. The $900,000 OBSAPR buy wiped the floor with his competition in a pair of Laurel allowance, winning by 12 1/4 lengths over a fast track Mar. 25 and a 13 1/2-length romp in the mud May 6. He repeated that effort in his return to New York, crushing a field that included MGSW Madefromlucky (Lookin at Lucky) by 10 1/2 lengths in a muddy renewal of the restricted State Dinner S. going 1 1/16 miles when last seen July 3, after which trainer Linda Rice said she had her eye on the GI Cigar Mile Dec. 2.

Lightly raced “TDN Rising Star” Mr. Crow (Tapizar) seeks his first black-type win in this spot. Graduating by an ultra-impressive 11 1/2 lengths at second asking at Saratoga July 22, the Todd Pletcher trainee followed suit with an impressive allowance victory upstate Aug. 30. He looks to rebound here after finishing a disappointing sixth last time in the GI Vosburgh Invitational S. here Sept. 30. Also exiting the Vosburgh is third-place finish and last term’s Bold Ruler winner Stallwalkin’ Dude (City Place).

Lael Stable’s Divining Rod (Tapit), winner of the 2015 GIII Lexington S., has been knocking at the door of his second graded win for quite some time now. A close second in last year’s Cigar Mile, he romped in Laurel’s Polynesian S. Aug. 12 and was fourth to champion Drefong (Gio Ponti) in Saratoga’s GI Forego S. Aug. 26. He was last seen completing the exacta behind Breeders’ Cup-bound Sharp Azteca (Freud) in the GII Kelso H. here Sept. 23.
