THE GREY GATSBY is set to launch what is likely to be the final season of his racing career in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh on May 22.
Trainer Kevin Ryan is hoping to take his stable star to the Breeders’ Cup later in the year, via Royal Ascot during the summer.
The Grey Gatsby kicked off his 2015 campaign with a trip to Meydan to chase home Solow in the Group 1 Dubai Turf but connections opted against a trip east this time around.
“Dubai comes very early and it’s a long year,” said Ryan.
“It is a great occasion but his stud career is very important and starting him a bit later gives us a better chance to get him right through to the end of the year.”
Good ground needed at the Curragh
Ryan is hoping the ground will be good at the Curragh next month as he returns to a race in which he finished fourth behind Al Kazeem last year.
“He’s in great form and we’re hoping to start in Ireland,” said the trainer.
“He’ll then have two entries at Ascot, the Hardwicke Stakes over 1m4f and the Prince Of Wales’s at a mile and a quarter.
“We’ll make our minds up after the Curragh but he hasn’t lost any of his speed.
“From Royal Ascot onwards there’s a Group 1 every month and we’d love to take him to the Breeders’ Cup if all things go well.
“He’s bigger and stronger again. If the ground wasn’t there for him in Ireland we’d go straight to Royal Ascot.”
